In May 2020, visitor arrivals to the Hawaiian Islands decreased 98.9 percent compared to a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to preliminary statistics released today by the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s (HTA) Tourism Research Division.

All passengers arriving from out-of-state and traveling inter-island during May were required to abide by a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine. Exemptions include travel for essential reasons like work or healthcare. In May, Governor David Ige’s “Stay-at-Home” order transitioned to the “Safer-at-Home” order, then eventually the state entered the “Act with Care” phase. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also continued to enforce its “No Sail Order” on all cruise ships.

In May, a total of 9,116 visitors traveled to Hawaii by air service compared to 841,376 total visitors (by air and cruise ships) during the same period a year ago. Most of the visitors were from U.S. West (5,842, -98.5%) and U.S. East (2,647, -98.7%). A few visitors came from Japan (14, -100.0%) and Canada (20, -99.9%). There were 593 visitors from All Other International Markets (-99.4%), most of whom were visiting from Guam. Total visitor days dropped 96.3 percent year-over-year.

A total of 97,753 trans-Pacific air seats serviced the Hawaiian Islands in May, down 91.3 percent from a year ago. There were no direct flights or scheduled seats from U.S. East, Japan, Canada, Oceania, and Other Asia, and very few scheduled seats from U.S. West (-88.3%) and Other countries (-58.1%).

Year-to-Date 2020

In the first five months of 2020, total visitor arrivals dropped 49.5 percent to 2,139,166 visitors, with significantly fewer arrivals by air service (-49.3% to 2,109,375) and by cruise ships (-60.7% to 29,792) compared to the same period a year ago. Total visitor days fell 46.3 percent.

Year-to-date, visitor arrivals by air service decreased from U.S. West (-49.3% to 917,741), U.S. East (-44.5% to 518,185), Japan (-51.6% to 294,255), Canada (-46.5% to 155,764) and All Other International Markets (-57.4% to 223,430).

Corona capacity calculation tool

0

Hamburg Convention Bureau’s has worked with MICECLOUD Solutions to add a new Coronavirus criteria to their venue search website, Micebooking.com. When searching for an event space, visitors to the site can click to apply the corona capacity calculation – this filters the venue options in line with current social distancing regulations, providing planners with a definitive list of spaces that will comfortably – and safely – host their chosen number of particpants. This new tool on Micebooking.com gives planners piece of mind that their chosen venue is the best fit – and safest option – for their meeting or event.

Kai Dieterich, interim head of the Hamburg Convention Bureau’s Conventions division, explains how the tool will provide important support for the events industry: “Conference rooms which previously hosted 1,000 people can now only hold a fraction of that amount due to current regulations. We introduced the corona capacity calculation to help planners make informed and safe choices for their event and also give location operators a valuable platform to showcase their venues. This is a tool which we’ll develop and update in line with guidelines – we can react quickly if distance regulations change, saving location operators and planners plenty of work”.

Stefanie Lemmermann from MICECLOUD Solutions GmbH, adds: “Together with the Hamburg Convention Bureau, we hope that the new service on our platform Micebooking.com will help make an important contribution to the city and its venues.”

In addition to this new search tool, the Hamburg Convention Bureau team is working intensively behind the scenes with key industry players to develop a business events re-launch timetable. The organisation is leading various working groups to deal with topics such as implementation recommendations for events, implementation of hygiene measures and hybrid event formats – all in order to prepare the city’s conference industry for the new business reality.

Guidelines for MICE Events in Osaka

Guidelines for MICE Events in Osaka

The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau has released the “Guidelines for MICE Event Organizers for Infectious Disease Control” on June 3, 2020.
MICE events (a general term encompassing exhibitions, academic conferences, and other business events) have long generated business opportunities and innovation, pushed research forward, and contributed to regional vitalization, fulfilling a vital role as a driving force in economic development. However, amid the COVID-19 pandemic the MICE industry has seen an unprecedented number of cancellations and postponements, stagnating the business activity that MICE events bring forth and creating a severe economic impact.

As such, the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau, with consensus from the Osaka prefectural and city governments, has taken various factors into consideration including government policies, the voices of MICE industry partners, the precedent of other industries, and the resumption of MICE activities around the world, in order to formulate these guidelines (under the guidance of infectious disease experts) for business event organizers meant to mitigate infection risk and provide recommendations on operations management.

We encourage business event organizers to use these guidelines to ensure the peace of mind of all event attendees. We sincerely hope for the re-opening of MICE events so that they may once again contribute to economic development.

Guidelines for MICE Event Organizers for Infectious Disease Control

1. Why We Created These Guidelines
We intend for MICE event organizers when hosting events in Osaka to use these guidelines to incorporate infectious disease risk mitigation in their event planning and management, so that both organizers and attendees can satisfactorily enjoy the event, and so that the Osaka MICE industry can be further vitalized.

Event industry ‘on the brink’ of permanent demise

Event industry ‘on the brink’ of permanent demise

The festival and event industry as we know it is on the brink of permanent demise according to research from the National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA). In a report out today, the organisation reports that 84% of all organizers questioned have seen their entire events program wiped out for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the industries peak summer months.

The NOEA is warning both attendees and government departments that the loss of these businesses could permanently change the shape of the festival and event industry and lead to the closure of some of the most recognised festival, sporting, cultural and event brands in the UK.

According to the research, the average loss to event businesses is £539,431 with over half suffering losses of £100,000 or more. The outdoor event and festival market contributes over £30.4 billion to and with over 141.5 million people attending UK events annually. Jobs within the sector are also under severe threat, the industry provides employment for over 589,000 people, many within small SME companies or as freelancers with historically low margins. Three quarters of the companies surveyed have taken advantage of the staff furlough scheme, but over 65% are planning redundancies.

In addition, 51% of have said that without further support they will not see the end of 2020. Of those surveyed, 65% only have liquidity for 6 months or less and 41% only have enough for the next 3 months. However, whilst 65% of those surveyed have already applied for government grants 80% have yet to receive anything.
